I don’t make it a secret that I am originally and currently from the state of Washington. Yesterday, Wednesday 9, May, 2012 the trial against Greg and JaLea Swezey started. This two weeks after a county judged that the exemption for Christians for faith healing would not hold up in this case. It seems we in Washington State have a law that allows a Christian Scientist to be the only medical attention a person needs. Highlighted by this 2009 article written by PZ Myers himself. In it he calls for the state to change these laws, and I have to agree with him completely. Even as a believer in alternative medicines I do not shun the fact that serious illness requires medical attention not the attention of a faith healer.
Greg and JaLea were members of the Church of the First Born. More like Cult of the First Born if you ask me. Greg was quoted in PZ’s article as stating he knew of his sons impending death and instead of calling medical attention to the boy he and his wife called their church to attempt to pray for his health.
If you are reading this and live in Washington State, please urge our politicians to get this law off the books. Also if you live outside of Washington I urge you to check if your state has a law like this and let your representatives know this kind of crap is not ok.
